Roblox has fully launched Custom Terrain Materials alongside initial improvements to terrain rendering, storage and delivery. Creators can publish games using these features for anyone on Roblox to play. Custom Terrain Materials support up to 62 materials, allowing creators to give landscapes different colors and appearances. The performance updates reduce terrain’s share of place file size and improve streaming and loading. One benchmark showed CPU memory overhead falling by 90%, with meshing latency dropping by 45%.
To activate the features, creators must update and restart Studio, set Expanded Terrain to Enabled under Workspace, then save and reopen the place. Places edited during Early Access also require the setting to be enabled again; otherwise, custom materials may appear as grass. Known limitations remain: custom Terrain material slots do not yet respect custom physical properties, and terrain under 16 voxels thick may disappear during play when streaming is enabled with a small radius.
